What products should you guys be using and how?
Let’s help make it less confusing with a quick guide on what’s available for men and how to use each product.
Wax – this gives a more matte look to your hair and we use it to give texture and add height if needed. It’s great on more tousled, rustic and rough styles. It can be used on long hair to roughen the ends to give definition but can also be used on all hair lengths.
Apply a small amount to your palms and rub vigorously through your hands to warm the wax up, then use to style the hair as needed.
Hairspray – it just adds hold to any style created. It’s great to help smooth the hair with the hold factor and again, it can be used on all lengths.
Shake well and spray 10-15cm away from where needed.
Sea salt spray– a product that you spray into the hair to provide texture. This one is better on longer hair as it gives the matted and messy look.
Shake well and spray into dry hair, then use your fingers to ‘mess up.’
Clay – this is similar to a wax but it’s a little less firm. It delivers a matte finish to give you a messy ‘straight out of bed’ look. It gives good definition, especially on days where you don’t have a lot of time to style your hair!
Work through the palms to warm, then apply to where it’s needed; generally on dry hair.
Fibre based products/putty’s – these are usually in liquid form but can be a powder too and they’re great for shorter, messier hair. Obviously, liquid will usually provide a wetter look. They’re lightweight products which gives you definition but not so much hold and they can sometimes become a little stickier.
If it’s in powder form, you usually shake into the required area and then use your finger to add texture where required.
Thickening sprays/lotions – these can help cover up patching/thinning hair or can just add height or body. They can be sprayed or applied directly onto the hair. The product sits on the hair making it swell, providing a fuller look to thinning hair. These products are only temporary and once washed will need to be applied again.
This is just a quick guide to help you navigate the world of male hair products as there are a lot available and it can become overwhelming. Once you’ve found one you like, you’ll always be able to achieve the look you like.
